For those just joining this travel saga- back in 2008 my friend Diana and I both celebrated retirements by taking a 65 day road trip! The plan was to travel by secondary roads from Michigan to Florida and back, writing a blog for the Detroit News as we went. It didn't take long to realize there were 3 personalities in the car! (Myself, Diana, and Gertie GPS!!)
When I last left you we were in Dalton, Ga. heading towards Warm Springs. We headed out during a rain storm that seemed to last forever! In order to "escape" the weather we decided to actually get on the expressway. Big mistake! It seemed the only other vehicles on that road were semi-trucks --front- back- and on both sides of us- causing us to drive all the way in a mist of spray!
Once in Warm Springs we realized the rain followed us! We stopped at a McDonalds where the first argument with Gertie began! As we left the parking lot and started to reenter the expressway Gertie chanted to "exit right"! Diana gave Gertie a harsh English lesson on the difference between "exit" and "enter"- ending with some name calling. I believe Diana called Gertie a Dummy, at which time I poured myself a drink! Okay- it was only coffee, but I mused how pleasant Bailey's Irish Cream would be as an addition! (Were those two driving me to drink?!?!)
Once at the Best Western we decided it was time to relax! I was hoping Diana and Gertie would be in a better mood in the morning! The setting was one of tranquility and beauty (even with the rain!)
The next day it was still raining! We decided not to slosh around in the rain to visit the famous Warm Springs, but lay low for the day. (The perks of retirement!)
We did manage to drag ourselves to the Bulloch House Restaurant. (pictured above). One of the big sacrifices we had to make for the blog was to eat and try out all the local food specialities and restaurants! This one was a bonanza! It was all-you-can-eat buffet with a whole lot of wonderful different thing! Homemade pickles, fried green tomatoes- lots of southern dishes- and of course, we had to try the lemon meringue pie and peach cobbler! (We had hoped our readers appreciated our dedication to providing them with good information! A sacrifice we were willing to make!)
The Best Western was wonderful! Their customer service was above and beyond the norm!
The next day we visited the Franklin D. Roosevelt's Little White House and Museum. With the weather clearing up we then drove through the countryside with 68 degrees and sunshine! We noted that everything looked so green! The day became gorgeous! A blue blue sky with an occasional wisp of a cloud. Pine trees were everywhere while we traveled south. For a while we were still in the mountains. A sea of green pines on the hills below looked like a rich carpet!
